When Marty and I went to Baja last year one of the MUST DO items on our list was to stop and see Coco. A legend of Baja and a star in the movies On Any Sunday and Dust To Glory we were looking forward to meeting the man himself. When we stopped at Mike's Sky Ranch Mike told us that Coco was in the hospital for surgery on his good leg. The story was not good and there was even some doubt whether Coco would make it.
As we went further south we heard more and more stories each more dismal than the last. Maybe he was alive, maybe he was still in the hospital, maybe he was back at his place but all was doubtful. Everyone seemed to have a story but few of them were hopeful. When we finally arrived at Coco's Corner the place was deserted. Nobody had been there for a while. We walked around and looked the place over but there was no Coco to be found. Bummer!
In Alfonsina we met a couple who knew him and they said that he was alive and doing well. He had lost his second leg but was in good sprits and was looking forward to getting back to his place. Marty and I were all smiles to hear the good news.
In fact the news is not all good after all. I have word that he's back in his home and in good spirits. However, thieves stole all his tools and appliances. They even stole the wiring out of the place! I know people in Baja are not wealthy but this seems particularly low. I've contacted Chloe Blair who lives in San Felipe and she said she would be happy to convey any donations to Coco. I've mentioned this to a few people and they asked how they could contribute too.
So I've set up this site to collect donations from whomever would like so send a buck or two to Coco. You can send me a check and I'll put them together and forward them to Chloe. To make it real easy I've added a PayPal button so that you can contribute that way. I'll forward 100% of your donation and absorb the PayPal fees myself. $1, $10, $50 it all goes a long way in Baja.
